I understand how difficult it is coming from a home where both my parents were addicted - one to alcohol the other to work (just as unhealthy, the same root cause - escaping pain) the 12 step program helped my mom so much and me too as she began her recovery I being the “scape goat” of the family also began attending 12 Step programs for adult children of dysfunctional families. My addiction is to “work”. Ugh! I did find literature for “Workaholics Anonymous” thankfully. The meetings are online. I should attend!

This is a a “social drinker” one who honors himself and his friendship with a friendly toast of high quality Scotch and then can quit again. A classic sign of an alcoholic is “denial”, they hide their drinking and don’t openly tell stories about their drinking episodes like Greg did.

I was going to congratulate you on your 43 years, that is absolutely amazing. I've been sober for only 21 years and have had REVELATIONS in my experience doing the 12 steps.
Dr silkworth wrote his thesis on alcoholism in the body and after it was well accepted, he wanted to take ownership for the writing.
Alcoholics Anonymous saved my life, but “we realize we only know a little”.
The 12 steps came from the Oxford group, which was 6 steps and Bill, Bob, and others made u to 12, which works miracles in my opinion and experience. (Rock solid experience) I know personally it not only works for me but others.
Since then doctors have tied genes to alcoholism and drug addiction, but then other doctors have said there isn't a gene for it. I'm with the ladder.

I too grew up in an alcoholic household and watched alcohol destroy those I loved. My youngest sister was killed by a drunk driver age 17 when she was 27z I was deeply affected by the devastating affects of alcohol and thankfully found recovery in 12 step programs for children of dysfunctional families. Those addicted to alcohol - are powerless over the substance. However there are those who can control their alcohol, they can take it or leave it. A classic sign of an addict is “denial.” An alcoholic will not publicly talk about their drinking episodes. They hide it.

Okay. But - - were they an alcoholic b4 they quit drinking? Alcoholics don't "quit" drinking to become "social drinkers" on the whim. That's a recipe for Cirrhosis of the liver - which typically leads to death. But I could be wrong - I've only watched only watched it happen to friends & family - so what the hell do I know? You’re right I agree alcohol like sugar, caffeine, other substances and even work and over eating can be destructive to health without self control. I too grew up in an alcoholic household and watched alcohol destroy those I loved. My youngest sister was killed by a drunk driver age 17 when she was 27z I was deeply affected by the devastating affects of alcohol and thankfully found recovery in 12 step programs for children of dysfunctional families. Those addicted to alcohol - are powerless over the substance. However there are those who can control their alcohol, they can take it or leave it. A classic sign of an addict is “denial.” An alcoholic will not publicly talk about their drinking episodes. They hide it.
Hi Greg, when you worked with infowars, were you living in/around Austin? I grew up in Texas and lived in Austin 1984-1998, when I left TX for the Pacific Northwest. What did you think of Russia? I missed those podcasts. We took a high school trip to Russia in 1983, when it was still closed. I’d like to see it again today.
